Windows 98 on ASUS Modern Card and FX6300: Possible?

$

Is Win 98 or any Win 9X operating system compatible with the above specs? Or better, can it actually detect a modern Seagate Hard drive to run the Setup?

My last try with Win2000 was a complete failure. But i didn't tried to follow any guide on this website (which i actually registered not only for help seeking). Are there procedures to this specific hardware? Anyone may help me with whatever you have, i study CS so no deal with editing or doing advanced system stuff. My purpose is to try diverse resources, games and maybe even development with this OS. Thanks.

Network connection issue (win-98)

There are times when I connect cameras, routers or other devices on my local lan that I don't always remember what their IP address is.  So I resort to using programs like "Advanced IP Scanner" to do a scan and show what IP's appear to be in use.  I've also written a dos batch file that performs 1 ping on each of the 254 IP addresses and pipes the result to a text file.  In both cases, if I have some audio streaming from the internet being played by VLC, or I have a web-cam window open (low-bandwidth, 1 frame per second) while I'm doing these scans, that the audio streaming or the webcam feed will drop out.

Is there some max_number_of_connections thing that I'm hitting on win-98?  Is there some registry entries that I can mess with?

Dell Precision M70 with Win98. Possible?

$

Hello all.

I am a proud owner of a D600 I managed to get running with the help of people from here and Vogons.

I was looking through what other laptops I could pick up cheaply and get 98 SE running on it.

I see alot of posts about D610's and D810's. Though very few on the Precision M70, has anyone tried to get 98 running on it?

http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/precn/en/spec_precn_m70_en.pdf

In theory it is possible. 915PM Chipset, IDE Drive, Sigmatel STAC 975X AC97. However I am not sure about the Nvidia Go1400 Graphics card. (Based on a Go6800). I can find drivers for 98 with the desktop 6800, but not anything specifically for the mobile versions. The alternative is to softmod the 1400 to a 6800, I think there are drivers for 6800? Also it is an MXM 3 based connection which is PCIE Will this be a problem?

Is there anything else I should watch out for before taking the plunge? Is the 915PM Chipset drivers or workaround stable?

Cheers!

Hi there!

I',m new and hope someone can help me out.

I recently gathered alot of hardware (mostly new in boxes :D) to build my childhood dream pc :)

Everything is build and ready to go but here's my question:

What's the best way to use this hardware? i have a win98se install disc (US) but i see there are alot of drivers fixes etc to make this work can someone help me get this thing fired up with the correct patches i would need to make it stable and perhaps make win98se look a bit better than it did back in the day i aprreciate it ALOT :)

Hey Guys;

I recently upgraded from my Sound Blaster Live to the Audigy ZS in my Windows 98 Machine. I am currently having alot of issues getting the card to run, so far i have installed the WDM drivers manually from a Driver CD i found on Vogans, but the sound keeps cutting out.

I was wondering has anyone got he Audigy ZS successfully running in Windows 98, if so what drivers and if you could provide a link.

Thanks

Alternative site to view MS KB articles?

$

No browser I'm using on win98 (FF2, Opera 12.02, Retrozilla 2, Palemoon 3.6.32).  With Netscape 7.2 I get "Error trying to validate certificate from support.microsoft.com using OSSP - malformed request).  On the others, I get a completely blank page.   If I select "no page style" in FF2, I get a set of content links along the left side of the page, extending several pages, but the content of the KB article is not there.  Even when I view source, I don't believe that the KB text is part of the page.  It must be loaded from a script or some other object that is not functional, not even with Opera 12.02.

Is there a trick that will make the KB material visible with any of these browsers, or is there an alternative third-party website that has captured the KB material for a wide range of MS products (notably win-9x/me) and will present them in a viewable way without simply pointing back to MS links?

(I've seen this lack-of-viewability of these KB articles for probably 3 to 5 years now when using these browsers.  Is this an issue for others as well?)

Makjing Win98SE work

$

I just joined this Forum.
I have an Acer Aspire 1700 and installed Win98SE. It was a bit tricky to get the past the out-of-memory problem, but that then seems to work.
Then I needed a VGA driver that Acer probably never had for that computer, or it is at least no more available.
I did, however, finally have success with VBE20 [universal] 140214, but then the out-of-memory problem started again.Obviously the driver occupies too much memory ...
My Config.sys has [386Enh] > MaxPhysPage=30000 and [vcache] >MaxFileCache=524288
Reverting the VGA driver to the basic one, the out-of-memory problem seemed no more to be there.
But the I tried to update with U98SESP3 and it could not expand the exe, obviously too little memory for that.
So I expanded the exe on a USB stick, but do not know how to install from the folder with the expanded exe.

Thankful for any advice!

Modern motherboards which are working with Windows 98 (discussion)

I have come like many others on this site looking for informations about today computer hardware which is working with Windows 98.

To make future searches of many others easier to find solution I will here write names of "modern" MBO which support Windows 98.

Conditions to enter this list are:

1) It is now in shops near you (not internet but in real shops)

2) MBO are supporting 2007 tehnology, Windows 98 SE and we can still find official drivers

UPDATE SUMMER 2011:

For this update it have been used information from Amazon because it is possible from this site to buy MBO in ulmost every state.

Biostar DDR2 Micro ATX Motherboard, with C7-D 1.6 GHz Processor, VIA CN896+8237S chipset (it is possible to download Win 98 SE official drivers for integrated graphics + IDE, SATA II from VIA web site). In theory processor C7-D 1.6 GHz is possible to change with Nano x2 because they are pin-to-pin compatible.

JetWay J7F4K1G5S-LF VIA C7 VIA NanoBGA2 VIA CN700 Mini ITX (SATA II, Max memory 1 GB)

Intel LAD865GVIPL Intel Celeron M @ 1.3GHz Socket 478 Intel 865GV (SATA I, Max memory 2 GB)

BIOSTAR P4M890M7SE LGA 775 VIA P4M890 (SATA I, max memory 4 GB)

AS ROCK AM2NF3-VSTA (support CPU until Phenom II X4 3.5 GHz, max 16 GB)

Earlier writen updates about MBO (2007-2010):

INTEL socket 775:

MBO ABIT, SG 80DC, SIS 661FX, BUS 800 MHz, VGA, SATA I (end of production december 2008)

*MBO ABIT, IP-95, VIA P4M890, DDR II, BUS 1066 MHz, SATA I (end of production december 2008)

MBO ASRock 775i65G R2.0, intel865, DDR I, SATA I

MBO ASROCK, 4COREDUAL-SATA2 R2.0, VIA PT880 Ultra, BUS 1066 MHz, DDR II, SATA 2

*MBO ASROCK, 4CoreDX90-VSTA R2.0, VIA® P4M900, VGA max 256 MB directX 9.0,

MBO ASUS P5SD2-VM mATX/SiS672/1066/DDR2/VGA 256 MB/PCI-ex Vista premium ready

MBO ECS P4M800Pro-M2, VIA P4M800Pro, VGA (rev 2.0) , DDR II,

*MBO ECS 662/1066T-M2, SIS 662, VGA 128 MB, DDR II, mATX

MBO Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775-RH (rev. 2.0).

*MBO MSI P4M900M3-L, VIA P4M900, BUS 1066, SATA II (end of production in fall 2008)

Socket 479

*MBO INTEL SiS662, Celeron 220 + MBO BLKD201GLY2 DDR II - 667, VGA SiS662 (production started in winter 2008/2009)

Socket 478

MBO ASROCK P4i65GV, i865GV, DDR, zvuk, VGA, S-ATA, LAN, AGP, mATX, s. 478

AMD

Today in shops near you it is ulmost impossible to find AM2 socket MBO which are supporting Windows 98.

After looking very hard I have make this finding:

socket AM2/AM2+:

MBO ASROCK, s. AM2, AM2NF3-VSTA, NVIDIA nFORCE 3 250, BUS 2000 MHz, AGP, serial ATA (it is still in shops (2011))

MBO AsRock ALiveDual-eSATA2. This is hybrid chipset. Both original chipset are having Win 98 drivers, but together ?

Interesting is that in CPU support list AsRock has added socket AM3 Phenom II, but officialy socket AM3 is not supported ?

Socket 754.

MBO ABIT, s. 754, KV85, VIA K8M800, BUS 1600 MHz, VGA, serial ATA (end of production december 2008)

MBO MSI K8MM3-V. Only 1 IDE. (end of production in 2008)

Abit has gone out of business ( http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=3675 )

To MBO with sign * are having integrated GPU and it is not possible to add graphic card supported with official drivers because Windows 98 has not recieved PCIE support.

Summer 2010 situation:

INTEL socket 775:

ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 support processors until Core 2 Quad Q6700(G0), Core 2 Duo E7500(R0), Pentium Dual Core E6300(R0), Celeron E3300. It is possible to download Win98SE drivers (IDE, RAID, SATA and USB) from Via site. MBO is still in shops (Amazon and others)

Small number of laptops like Asus K50C are using SiS672+968 chipset for which is possible to download graphic card drivers

INTEL socket 478:

MB Asrock P4I65GV Zvuk+VGA+SATA+LAN

3rd section update (summer 2010). First has been in 2007

Issues with MSI 970A SLI Krait - Help needed...

$
0
0

Hi,

i've installed W98SE on an MSI 970A SLI Krait, and also installed XP pro 32bit, and W10 home 64bit.

------------------------------------

Hardware:

------------------------------------

AMD FX 4320 (4 cores, 95W TDP, 4GHz base, 4.2 HGz Turbo)

Soundblaster Audigy PCI

TP-Link RTL8111B Gigabit PCIe 1x

1 GB Ram (all works fine with 32GB, might have 16GB in the end)

3 SSDs (60GB SATA III FAT32 for W98SE, 120GB SATA III NTFS for XP, 240GB SATA III NTFS for W10 home 64bit)

1 DVD-RAM SATA

2 x EVGA NVidia GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB PCIe, linked with SLI bridge

USB2 works on all OS (compatibility set to "Auto", USB3 on XP and W10)

Temporarily a SATA I-controller to have a DVD on W98SE, but will most probably switch to RLoews SATA-patch, IF i keep this machine...

------------------------------------

The minor issues

------------------------------------

The OS and hardware installed, there were only minor issues:

- i had to switch to Ushers method early on during the installation of W98SE even with just 1 GB of Ram

- on this board, although the chipset allows for it, MSI did not implement separate ATA/AHCI-settings for the SATA-channels 5 and 6, so i installed W98SE on the controller in IDE/ATA-mode, and when installing XP and W10, switched to AHCI-mode. This of course set the controller in W98SE to compatibility-mode, which voids the use of other SATA-Devices (like the DVD-RAM). I used an add-in SATA-I controller for $things from DVD, but removed it later. I guess this means getting RLoews SATA-patch later on, if i want to have normal operations with the onboard-controller set to AHCI. This is a minor issue on W98SE, though, as with the SSD, the system is still fast.

- The board has bad quality-control by MSI, so many people had to swap boards with their seller, until they had a working one in the end, and so was me: Only on the third attempt i had a working one.

------------------------------------

SLI-Issues

------------------------------------

No, there is no SLI on W98SE (yet). I'm pretty sure this will not change, as i learned about SLI from i.e. the "Hybrid-SLI"-mod-community, and i know, the issue is complicated.

Still, i wanted to use SLI at least on XP and W10.

My question, now (already posted on the german MSI-forum, and NVidias SLI-support-community-forum):

Why does the SLI-option not show up in my NVidia-System panel (in XP or W10) ?!?

I know this is not directly related to W9x... if you can point me to a place where this is to be located... move this thread, and tell me... :)

I know that RLoew has this board as well: Did you try SLI? Do you have any idea?

Cheers, Ragnar G.D.

'Loud' sound cards for win98?

$
0
0

Sorry -- I can't think of a more dignified title than that.

I'm running Win98SE autopatched, NUSB3.6, etc. on a Dell 2400 and it works FINE -- very fast. I use it for an old version of Autosketch (old enough that I first installed it on Win3.1) and some games. THANK YOU AGAIN to the many people who developed fixes and packages to make this practical and to several others who helped me with specific problems.

The biggest issue now is that the sound volume from the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card I'm using is enough only for headphones. I know of one card that will produce plenty of speaker volume in this machine -- the Riptide 90079 (no suffix) -- but that one causes Combat Flight Simulator II to crash, er, on takeoff. Really ... push forward the throttle, F6F starts to roll, and it freezes solid. The game plays fine with the Turtle Beach card, but only with headphones.

Surely there's another card that would work -- PCI, has both sound and joysitck, works under Win98 -- and would produce enough volume to drive speakers. Maybe a watt or two per channel? Not much more. Suggestions?

Here's how I fixed my Random Screen Blackouts

RAM: 512 MB RAM
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7VAX
VIDEO ADAPTER: 64 MB NVIDIA GEFORCE 4 MX440 AGP 8X

The Fix works if: Your display works normal if you boot in Safe Mode (without any drivers) and when you boot into Windows normaly, the screen will start going black at random times and without any message.

After restart many times you are unable to boot to windows desktop (the screen goes black) and if you get to desktop, you get a message that says something is wrong with your display settings and you get a lower resolution.

REQUIREMENTS (BEFORE YOU START DOWNLOAD TO HAVE IT READY ON Hard disk):

MSD - to find memory adresses

AIDA 32 - to find exactly which version of what you have (hardware and software)

Startup Cop - to block startup programs

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner - i'm using it for 2 years without a single registry problem

Video Driver - NVIDIA users with same adapter as mine should use v45.23

Nasty File Remover - to remove video driver remnants (if any)

HIMEMX.EXE - new and improved memory manager that handles memory better on new hardware

                     THE FIX

NVIDIA USERS: Create a BATCH file (copy and paste text below, then go to Save as and write "RENVIDIA.BAT" Move the batch
file somewhere like C:\DOS\ OR C:\ for easier access). In CONFIG.SYS add SET PATH=C:\DOS if you will keep RENVIDIA.BAT there.

ALL OTHER VIDEO ADAPTER USERS: Find the paths and drivers of your troublemaking video adapter and then make a BATCH file
that does the same as my RENVIDIA.BAT. Save the file and name it "RENVIDEO.BAT"

The step above should enable you to boot to desktop (for those who's screen goes black before they can boot to
desktop and in case of any more trouble).

Enter the BIOS and DISABLE EVERYTHING that you don't USE (Parallel port, Network...) And set AGP to 4X

Download Startup Cop and DISABLE: As much as possible but don't disable hotfix and patch files.

Download "HIMEMX.EXE" and get rid of HIMEM.SYS (rename it).

In CONFIG.SYS USE EXACTLY (Copy and Paste) these:

SWITCHES=/F /E
DOS=HIGH, UMB
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEMX.EXE /NUMHANDLES=128
LASTDRIVE=Z
BUFFERS=11,0
FILES=90
FCBS=1,0
STACKS=24,256
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\SETVER.EXE

Other CONFIG.SYS Parameters are your choice.

In SYSTEM.INI SET these values, however DON'T COPY ANY VALUE THAT STARTS WITH "EMMExclude":

The "EMMExclude" rows are here ONLY to give you insight into how many memory adresses need to be excluded. You may have to
exclude more to achieve stability.

1. Download all files mentioned above, put them on a CD-DVD or USB

2. Create RENVIDIA.BAT (if you can't boot to desktop, restart and hold CTRL. A menu should show up.
choose "COMMAND PROMPT ONLY", go to EDIT and MAKE RENVIDIA.BAT)

3. Run RENVIDIA.BAT

4. Search and erase all files with extension *.BAD

5. Boot into Desktop  so you can bring files that you downloaded to the Hard disk (since you didn't boot into SAFE MODE,
you have access to CD-DVD drive and USB)

6. Install and prepare/set up the files

7. Uninstall and Remove remnants of existing Video adapter driver

8. Go to Device Manager and DISABLE Advanced Power Management Support

9. Go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP\ and remove ALL Rb00X.CAB files and then clean the registry with Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

10. Tweak CONFIG.SYS and SYSTEM.INI

11. Run MSD from PURE DOS (Press and hold CTRL and Choose COMMAND PROMPT ONLY and WRITE DOWN MEMORY ADRES RANGES TO EXCLUDE)

12. Install video adapter driver

13. Run MSD again and this time add Video adapter memory ranges for excluding

14. Tweak SYSTEM.INI (under [386Enh] Exclude memory with EMMExclude=XXXX-XXXX)

Keep RENVIDIA.BAT in path on hard drive so you can use it if need be.

This is a complex problem so the fix is also complex. The cause of blackouts was attempts to write on top of used memory.

Any tampering with used memory would make a blackout and corrupt the video driver.

I'm using these settings for 70 day's without a single blackout. I consider this complex video adapter issue FIXED.

Keep Windows 9X alive.

Hello,

does anyone know a good VPN service, which is using a protocol supported by Windows 95/98SE/ME? I am now using AirVPN, which only has OpenVPN, which doesn't support Windows 9x.

Thanks

K-Meleon v1.5.4

Vanilla Windows 98/ME
Firefox 2.0.0.20
Opera 11.63
Lunescape 5.0

Opera 12.5 build 1513 (Requires KernelEx extensions by jumper!)
Opera 12.02 (Mostly fine, but pages can render funny and HTML is poor)
Qupzilla 1.1.5 (Very slow and not very usable! Tends to freeze for brief amounts of time! Tested on Windows ME!)
Qupzilla 1.43 (Install Qupzilla 1.1.5 and simply copy its Qtwebkit4.dll over that of more recent Qt4 browsers. You also might need to copy Phonon4, Mscvr90, and Msvcp90 if the newer browser doesn't have it)
QTWeb 3.5.4 (Portable Edition)
CometBird 11 (May require jumper's extensions)
Slimboat 1.1.50 (Install Qupzilla 1.1.5 and simply copy its Qtwebkit4.dll over that of more recent Qt4 browsers. You also might need to copy Phonon4, Mscvr90, and Msvcp90 if the newer browser doesn't have it. Both the installer and portable versions didn't work for me! May require jumper's KernelEx stubs!)
Arora 0.10.0-1 ? (Install Qupzilla 1.1.5 and simply copy its Qtwebkit4.dll over that of more recent Qt4 browsers. You also might need to copy Phonon4, Mscvr90, and Msvcp90 if the newer browser doesn't have it, needs to be tested)
K-Meleon 1.8 (Requires KernelEx extensions by jumper! Read here for instructions)
Firefox 3.6.28 (The most stable KernelEx application in my experience, solid, but incapable with many modern websites)
Firefox 9 (10 and later is unstable)
Palemoon 8
Flock 2.6.1 (Decent, but may have some crashing issues; Firefox 3.6.28 is better)
Google Chrome 1.0 - 32??? - Requires an offline installer (I recommend a very old version of chrome), Blackwingcat's Chrome Tool for W2K; Instructions

Needs testing
Sleipnir 2
Green Browser
Maxthon (I doubt the latest version would work, but what about any version after Windows 9x support was dropped?)
K-Meleon
Dooble
The World Browser
ZAC Browser (I know it sounds very weird, but its at least a chance)

Doesn't work
Any modern browser
Sleipnir 3+
Qupzilla 1.66 (Yes, even if the dll's are copied over from the older version)
Firefox 10+
Slim Browser 5.00
Dooble Browser (Qt5)
Otter Browser (I'm assuming both the xp and modern version)
Oxy Browser

Try to find any Qt4 based web browsers! They tend to work on Windows 9x with KernelEx! Also inform me if there's any program similar to Wise Program Uninstaller for Windows 9x!

Registry Hack to prevent Win98 "Advanced Startup menu" from ever running

Hello, I was directed to this group in hopes to have a question answered. I have a PC in a arcade type environment, the PC is running Windows 98 SE. And as it is in a Arcade Cab, I can not "shutdown" the PC with the start button.

I have it set to scandisk every start to check for errors ect...

But windows wants to run the Advanced Startup menu when it detects a improper shutdown. This is not acceptable.

How can I force Windows to boot "normal" every time even if it gets improperly shut down?

Installing Windows 98 SE on Dell Latitude D630 with Intel GPU

Hi,

I've looked around here, here, and here, and I've installed these, but I'm still having issues with the thing.

With the "proper" amount of RAM (less than 512 MB), it installs fine. But when I try to boot in normal mode, it hangs at a black display. I got it to boot up once in normal mode and it detected a bunch of hardware (of course, there were no drivers for them), and then another hard freeze at "Finalizing Windows Settings" (or words to that effect), and any reboot into normal results in the black display again.

I've changed a bunch of BIOS settings (turning things on, turning them off), to no avail.

Thanks,

c

Laptop says its always plugged in? [SOLVED]

Title says it all. My Dell Latitude D600 laptop is refusing to show battery level despite not even being on an AC Adapter.

I went to the Power Option Properties in the control panel, but still no change.
Am I missing a dll file? Once I had this issue installing XP on the same computer, but fixed it by downloading the missing dll file and placing it in the right system folder.

Edit: This this ACPI that's missing?

Edit 2: Googled a bit and found lack of ACPI is the issue.

Enable/Disable ACPI

Enabling/ Disabling -

The following instructions will allow enable ACPI with Windows 98:

To enable ACPI after Windows 98 is installed, run Regedit and go to the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Detect

Create a new DWORD value called "ACPIOption" and set it equal to 1.

In Control Panel, run Add New Hardware and choose hardware detection. ACPI should be detected and installed. After the system is rebooted, all ACPI-enumerated devices will be set up again.

You don't need to insert your cd, just direct the driver finder to C:/win98
