i was wondering if anyone has experience with hd tach 2.61, the benchmark tool that does read testing in the free version. i feel like im getting very poor speeds. i tested recently some hard drives and even an ssd today, many of them were on 440bx chipsets, i looked into pio vs dma modes and the drives i used always had dma checked in device manager, with also the 64 KB option selected for direct memory access controller. i noticed that based on hd tach 2.61, i got no more than 27.9 mega BITS per second on any of the last tested drives, the 27.9 mbps came from the western digital blue 160 GB hard drive, one of the last and fastest pata hard drives too, but i got only about 3.5 MB/s max. i tested a supertalent 8 GB ssd today and got about 20 mbps, which is about 2.5 MB/s, slower than the western digital hard drive, which i find weird because there shouldn't be any reason that its slower in ANY way. i make sure to always apply the early 440bx patch in all builds which always helped with performance, i would get even slower numbers if i didn't apply this patch and just went straight to the newer chipset update which i apply later on.

Can't connect to Internet
Hello I am using Windows 98 (nostalgia reasons) and I can't for get the internet working. My motherboard has a built-in ethernet adapter called Realtek RTL 8139/810X. I successfully installed the drivers for it and in the device manager it says "this device is working properly". When I connect the cable from my router the light on the adapter lights up. Then I set up a static IP, and yes I set the TCP/IP to the adapter in network options. And I still can't connect to the internet. What do I do?
Wireless LAN on Win98SE
Hi!
I've just built a Win98 macchine, based on a MS6163 motherboard, a Coppermine Celeron 1000MHz on slotket, 128MB of RAM, nVidia GeForce4 MX440 GPU, SoundBlaster AWE64 sound card. I mainly use this machine with Impulse Tracker and Audacity and I usually download IT, MOD, S3M, WAV and MP3 files from a FTP server on the Web. This PC can't be connected via Ethernet to the router because is located in a different room, so I'd like to install a WLAN card. I round many cards:
- PCI Atheros AR5005GS: can't find Win9x drivers
- PCI Intellinet Wireless G Network Adapter (Ralink RT2560 chip): set up driver and utility, but in Device Manager shows a Code 10 error and the utility can't find the card. Tried many versions, none worked.
- USB ZyXEL G-202: on attached disk, there wasn't 9x driver, but the box and the user guide say that it is fully compatible with 98SE and ME. ZyXEL website provides driver, but no Wireless utility. Code 10 in Device Manager.
- PCI USRobotics Wireless G Turbo Adapter: found driver and utility, Code 10.
No adapter worked. I did a last try: RTL8193 Fast Ethernet PCI card. Code 10, Realtek diag tool doesn't detect the card. Then, Kingston KNE20BT 10BaseT ISA card, Code 10. Same thing with RTL8026AS ISA Adapter.
The same 98 setup disk has been used on my old Latuitude XPi P133ST. Network stuff is OK and I used a PCMCIA Fast Ethernet card, until the CPU stopped working.
What can I do?
Thanks in adavance, Enrico

MS-DOS 6.22 + Shared NAT = No internet!
Hello, everyone!
I have a problem here. I'm running MS-DOS 6.22 under Virtual PC 2007 with the Intel DC21140 packet driver and for some reason, the internet doesn't work when I set the first adapter to use Shared networking (NAT).
For example, when I run the Arachne browser, I end up getting a Arachne Network Error (Unable to initalize TCP/IP) when attempting to access the Google homepage.
Here's what the screenshot looks like:
This next screenshot has the settings of what network adapter that I'm using:
If I select "Lnksys WMP54G v4.1 Wireless-G PCI Adapter" and use the "192.168.254.X" IP address, I can connect to the internet under MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 just fine.
But if I select Shared Networking (NAT) and use 129.168.131.x as the IP address, the internet doesn't connect at all.
The Shared Networking feature works fine in Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and later.
Is there anyway how to get the internet access working under MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1 using the Shared Networking (NAT) adapter under Virtual PC?
Should I post the CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or WATTCP.CFG configurations to see what could be wrong here as well?
Need Help Finding a Good Graphics Card For The GX110
Its been a while since I last posted something in this forum. I have a Dell Optiplex GX110 WITH 510 MB, over 800mhz, runs Windows 95 OSR 2.5, and has an integrated Intel 810 chipset for display. After 5 years of use since salvaging this equipment, the default components such as sound and display, have taken their toll and it was time for some minor component upgrade.
The first step I took was replacing the Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V that came with the machine, with the Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold ISA card. This, of course, required me to buy a riser card that includes both ISA and PCI slots, since the original riser had only PCI's. The reason was that certain games and utilities that used MIDI music sounded horrendous with the 64V. The AWE64 completely outclassed it.
However, I am having difficulty finding a good graphics card. The best ones tend to be the AGP cards. However, since the GX110 has an integrated chipset, it has NO support for AGP whatsoever. It is understandable since the GX110 was built as an office computer and not a gaming computer. There are some good PCI graphics card. One of them is the 3DFX Voodoo3 PCI cards, which provided superior 2D/3D graphics. However, neither Ebay nor Amazon have them listed. Only the AGP versions are listed. Any other options or does anyone know where else I can find Voodoo3 pci cards?
Modifying search function
Hi guys, sorry if this has been discussed already several times but I wonder if it would be possible to:
- to highlight the full line of a search result not just the file name only
- maybe even additionally list file versions in case of dll's, etc.
Best wishes, MiKl
Windows 95 in VPC 2007?
Hello all,
Not sure who will see this first, if you remember me, I just wanted to apologise about the way I acted 2 years ago, I should have never swore, raged or anything, it's all my fault, and yes, you are all right, windows 95 does not run in VPC 2007, Finally, I should have had more patience.
Issues with Printer/Scanner-Combo
Hi Guys, I have a Lexmark 1130 Printer/Scanner-Combo. Drivers are installed and the device manager does not show any problems !!
I only use it to scan so the printer is not installed. Through the years whenever I wanted to scan the app complained about that but scanned anyway !!
- When I just pre-scan everything is fine.
But trying to do a real scan causes a crash.

After that the scanning starts and is successful but all printers are gone. Clicking on the printer folder freezes the OS.
I tried different versions of spool32.exe and also de-installing KernelEx !! Trying to now install the printer causes the same problems.
Does anyone maybe know what could be wrong ??
HD Audio under 98SE or ME?
I want to try Windows 98SE or ME on an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad Z60m (similar to a T43), however this seems to be the only thing that is not working (I used a modded ATI Catalyst driver that worked on the T43 on my Z60m with no issues, most other drivers work)
I've seen the SciTech SNAP Audio drivers but have not tried them yet (they claim to support HD Audio on older operating systems), any experiences with that?
Install Win98SE on computer without CD and Floppy
I want to install Win98SE on a P4 computer which has neither floppy not CD. It had Win98 earlier but the HDD got damaged and have put new one.
Is there any possibility of installing through USB. Searched a lot but not getting proper instructions?
I need to install Win98SE only to be able to use an old piece of equipment. Can't install any higher version on this.
Software compatible with ME only?
Was there ever a software title produced that was compatible with Windows ME, but not compatible with Windows 98?
I've never been a fan of Windows ME, but its trajectory fascinates me. It came out after Windows 98, so logically it ought to have been supported and targeted by vendors longer...but it wasn't. It contained a few minor feature additions, but had most of its DOS functionality crippled and was popularly regarded as a net loss relative to its predecessor...and I doubt most developers did anything to dissuade this notion. I seem to remember programs from about ten years ago that conversely advertised compatibility with 98, but not ME!
Installing Windows 98 SE on Dell Latitude D630 with Intel GPU
Hi,
I've looked around here, here, and here, and I've installed these, but I'm still having issues with the thing.
With the "proper" amount of RAM (less than 512 MB), it installs fine. But when I try to boot in normal mode, it hangs at a black display. I got it to boot up once in normal mode and it detected a bunch of hardware (of course, there were no drivers for them), and then another hard freeze at "Finalizing Windows Settings" (or words to that effect), and any reboot into normal results in the black display again.
I've changed a bunch of BIOS settings (turning things on, turning them off), to no avail.
Thanks,
c
Problems installing Windows 95 in QEMU 2.7
I have a problem here.
I got as far as the first half of the setup phase when attempting to install the retail upgrade release of Windows 95 (v4.00.950) on top of Windows 3.1 under the latest version of QEMU (v2.7).
When I restarted the virtual machine, Windows 95 throws this error message when attempting to continue Windows 95 setup:
QuoteWhile initializing device IOS
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
Simply copying the IOS.VXD file into the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32 sub-directly didn't help.
Here is the current configuration used to attempt to boot up Windows 95 under Qemu 2.7:
Quoteqemu-system-i386 -m 65536K -M pc -cpu pentium -L . -drive file=C:\Qemu\configs\Win95\ide0-hd0.img,bus=0,unit=0,media=disk,format=raw,cyls=8322,heads=16,secs=63,trans=lba -drive file=C:\Qemu\configs\Win95\ide0-hd1.img,bus=0,unit=1,media=disk,format=raw,cyls=8322,heads=16,secs=63,trans=lba -drive file=C:\Qemu\configs\Win95\setup.iso,if=ide,bus=1,unit=0,media=cdrom -drive file=C:\Qemu\configs\Win95\boot.img,if=floppy,index=0,format=raw -drive file=C:\Qemu\configs\Win95\floppy1.img,if=floppy,index=1,format=raw -boot c -soundhw sb16 -vga cirrus -k en-us -net nic,vlan=0,model=ne2k_isa -net user,vlan=0,smb=I:\TEMP
I'm wondering if this is a bug when attempting to install OS or not. Are there any workarounds on how to get the IOS.VXD error when attempting to start Windows 95 under Qemu?
Thanks.
(I'm sorry I had to find a way to use quotes and clean up the messy formatting. That's why I had to edit this thread.)
NVidia drivers 82.69
Suddenly, newer drivers were found out of nowhere.
http://www.nvworld.ru/drivers/old/WideWin9x.rar
Those drivers are marked Sept 11 2006 and are believed to provide widescreen support for all nVidia graphic cards up to 6800.
Series 7 entries are absent in the inf so you'll have to edit if file yourself.
How to install Windows 98SE or ME on Dell Latitude D600
Installing Windows 98SE/ME on a Dell Latitude D600 is NOT for beginners or novices, this process may take hours to do
Special thanks to keenmaster486, notsofossil and PROBLYMCH3LD!!!
Important!!! If you're using Windows 98SE on this laptop, make sure you install all official updates, otherwise the audio driver won't install properly! (I recommend downloading the unofficial service pack!)
Link to drivers! (Includes Chipset, Audio, Video, Ethernet, and Broadcom Wireless Card!)
Important Notes:
- If your laptop uses a Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN Mini-PCI Card click here
- On Windows 98SE, all updates must be installed (I would recommend the service pack) in order for the audio driver to properly install!
- WPA2 is indeed possible with the use of Odyssey Client for Windows 9x! This useful wireless client allows WPA2 on 9x!
- If any information is incorrect, do not hesitate to message me or post!
Kept for historical purposes, in case the link goes wrong!

https://www.techtalk.cc/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=3566
To use internet, make sure you download a wireless utility (If you need WPA2 or use a non intel wireless pro 2100 card)
- Don't rely on KernelEx to install W2K or XP drivers, it will not work! In my experience, KernelEx is not efficient for drivers!
- If installing Windows ME never plug anything in the laptop during boot! Flash drives will hang the boot! Turn off and unplug everything before rebooting.
Fun with web-bots using Win-98 Personal Web Server
Starting early this month, I installed the Personal Web Server that comes with win-98 on one of my home systems and forwarded port-80 from my router to the PC. As expected, there were a lot of requests from bots for files that don't exist. After a few days I created those missing files by taking a 60 mb porn video and replicating it as many times as necessary, creating various directory trees and placing these replicated files in the correct places so they'd be served up when requested. Examples of the most commonly-requested files are:
config.php
setup.php
sitemap.xml
testproxy.php (this is very common)
stssys.htm
robots.txt
wp-login.php
xmlrpc.php
The default.asp page gets requested a lot, but I think it can't be a binary file because only a fraction of it ever gets uploaded and I think that corresponds with an EOF character being hit. Some of the more strange file-requests are:
/muieblackcat
/ncsi.txt
/w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:)
I've served up that 60 mb file about 85 times so far, totalling just over 5.15 gb. My upload speed is only about 70 k/sec so I figure I'm tying up those bots for at least 15 minutes each time they request these files. My internet plan is unlimited and this is the upload direction we're talking about so I'm probably going to substitute a 1 or 2 gb file at some point.
Over at $dayjob my web server is seeing the same sort of hits for these files, but for a twist I'm performing an http re-direction on them to a 4 gb file being hosted by a remote server. I've tested the redirection to see if the bots follow it by pointing to the PWS on my home server and in most cases the redirection is followed. There doesn't seem to be a way to setup re-directions on win-98 PWS like there is on IIS4 running on NT4.

Help with games in Windows 98SE gaming pc.
Hello guys, i need some help with my pc, it has the following specs:
Windows 98SE with Unofficial SP3 and KernelEX.
80GB HDD
ATI Radeon 9550 256MB AGP
1GB RAM 333MHZ
Motherboard Asrock 775i65g rev 1.0
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.9GHZ 1066FSB in LGA775
and other stuff like Linksys WIFI modem, internal DVD writer, external HP CD-RW writer, internal 3com LAN card, frontal USB and card reader, full atx case, DELL SK-8135 USB multimedia keyboard, HP Optical USB Mouse.
The problem its that games like Need for Speed High Stakes look choppy? (like lag dunno the word) even in 640*480 resolution, what could be wrong. I installed a patch for more than 1gb ram and it only worked with 1.5Gb so i removed the 512MB stick and left just the 1gb stick. Also it has 2 partitions and the other one with XP in NTFS.
