I've seen in various threads that users modding/hacking Windows 9x files recalculate the PE header checksums of the modded file.
What's the purpose of that?

Can anyone tell me why this application won't work on Windows 95? Seems like it has some memory issues but is there anything that could be done about it?

The catalyst for revisiting Windows 98 came after experiencing Windows XP re-activation issues following hardware changes. Mostly to keep an old Windows install around to play favourite games, plus it's still a fun system to utilize. Finally completed Road Rash - lol. For retro use, Windows 98 is pretty good, although most users may now have trouble finding a printer to work on this system, if that is desired. I have three printers at home, only one has Windows 98 drivers, all work with Windows XP. Printer manufacturers appear to have made these old printer cartridges hard to find and/or very expensive to encourage the never ending upgrade cycle. Finding an old Windows 98 friendly scanner shouldn't be an issue.
I recently set up two Windows 98 systems. Nostalgic, the same user experience i remember. The installer actually takes quite a while compared to a lean Linux OS, but otherwise works well. Reasonably simple and lean OS, easy to set up and manage. NO ACTIVATION REQUIRED! Occasionally a little flaky but nothing that can't be fixed with some tweaking or a reboot. Once setup, no more updates required.
As i still use Windows 98 era hardware on a daily basis (800 MHz systems, BIOS dates 1999-2001, RAM 384-512 MB), my interest was setting up and running this retro OS on bare metal. To wonderful surprise, finding hardware drivers was quite simple with a little searching. I ended up hoarding quite a few graphic, audio and network drivers, including Windows 98 'driver packs'. Anyone needing drivers, it may be best to search the manufacturer's sites first, as many are still archived and available, otherwise these resources should help:
* https://driverscollection.com/
* http://www.network-drivers.com/
* http://www.driverguide.com/
I spent way too much time downloading Windows 98 updates, 108 in total, including 2To4DigitDateConversionTool.exe, many 'Q' updates, several 'KB' updates, unicows and a DirectX9 patch. Unfortunately, most were obtained from non-Microsoft sources, as updates are no longer available from Microsoft servers and a roll-up pack was never released. I did not want to use one of the unofficial update packs and purposely avoided updates related to undesired (for me) software, including Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Dial Up Networking, Macromedia Flash Player, MDAC, Microsoft .NET Framework and Microsoft Virtual Machine. From recent testing, both Internet Explorer 5 and 6 are essentially non-functional with modern browsing and Windows Media Player 9 no longer provides online multimedia browsing. I just wanted to keep my install relatively default and 'official'.
Feel free to contact me if you can't find a desired update. In hindsight, unsure this effort was worthwhile as Windows 98 is now essentially a retro hobby OS. If a system is experiencing a specific issue, such as shutdown hang, applying a few specific updates may be warranted.
As far as i know, the oldest OS officially supported by Apple's Bootcamp is Windows XP, i've Tried 98 even via a Live CD that's patched together. big problem is that halts it right away are USB Drivers(no USB, = No Keyboard and mouse) if anyones managed to hackily patch something together, can these be linked? the older Mac Mini's that still had a Disc Drive would be pretty nifty for a 98 PC and to save desk Space (i have a Mid 2010 model ((hardware Identified as "Macmini4,1")) that has the Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz / Nvidia 320M iGPU, wouldnt mind getting it to work if it were at all possible as these things take so little space.
Hello,
I'm hoping to find a way to transfer storage from a modern smartphone directly. I haven't had much success with an adapter into my smartphone and want to see if I can find an alternative to indirect methods (FTP, cloud storage, Netoworking, etc.)
Is there a way to make a phone's internal or external storage appear as a flash drive on a pc? I don't want to have to try dual-booting with Linux. It would be nice if I could just transfer images and potential downloads onto the pc.
Well in case you do not know Windows Update v3/v4 was removed in August 2011. I started working on a project that consists of opening Windows Update v3 and v4 but locally to install that small amount of updates.
What I did was install on my LGA775 Windows 2000 Advanced Server, then install the services of IIS 5.0, DNS and WINS (required for Windows 9x); There are articles and videos on youtube to know about Windows server. Create a domain www.update.microsoft.com and v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and then edit the hosts file to access the site from your network and not from the MS servers. Then use the ruby script called "wayback_machine_downloader" to download sites from the Web Archive since content is stored in this site.
I started testing the WUP3 site from Windows 95 OSR2.5, and here I show you a screenshot and a list of some errors that I witnessed:
This capture is really from my Windows 95 VM, it is not an image of a site from 2011 or earlier.
Here the defects:
1. My Windows 95 is in Spanish but the Windows Update is in English, even though you have the folder / Static_w95 / V31site / x86 / w95 / en
2. Neither seek me updates when I click on Product Updates I get an error
3. This is not whit Windows 95, if not with the NT 4.0 is not redirected to me.

Hello everyone,
Would some kind soul be able to give me the fixes that Microsoft released for the 95/98/98se/ME operating systems please? I would be very grateful. I've tried searching google, but the site that I had found some of them on before, the excellent MDGx, appears unavailable. I've also tried archive.org with little success. The updates I am talking about are the ones named similarly to "24052usa8.exe", "256015usa5.exe", "241679usam.exe" and the like.
Undoubtedly this question would have been asked before, so I had a search in msfn.org, but I didn't want to necro old posts.
Thanks you.
Hey there,
I just built a Win98SE-Machine and used the MSI K8NGM-V Motherboard. Got everything running instead of drivers for sound and network. I installed a PCI-LAN-Card so network isn't needed that much.
Looks like the board uses
Quote8 channels HD audio codec Realtek ALC880 Manual
Found these drivers for Win98SE but Sounddrivers won't install correctly.
Any ideas? I'm thankful for every advice!
With Opera 12.02 under Windows 98, I cannot access many websites. I get fatal error 40 messages, no matching encryption methods.
I followed the technique suggested in the link above of copying a Opera 12.18 system to a Opera 12.02 folder to get Opera 12.18 on Windows 98. The technique says to leave in place, from Opera 12.02, opera.dll, html5_entity_init.data, and the gstreamer directory.
I had some difficulty getting this to work because, in my Win 98 system, I had Multi User=0 in [System] in Operaprefs_default.ini. When I copied the 12.18 system from Windows 7, I copied the Windows 7 operaprefs_default.ini file. That file did not include a Multi User spec. The copied system did not recognize my profile settings in program files\Opera 12.18\profile. When the program opened, I had no menus. When I put the spec back in, the program worked. It took a while to figure this out.
Having done that and used the program, I wonder what this exercise accomplishes.
In settings, advanced, security, security protocols, details, I still have the ciphers that I had in 12.02 in Windows 98. Compared with the ciphers available in 12.18 in Windows 7, I have no ECDHE, elliptic curve Duffie Huffman ciphers, and no GCM, Gelois Counter Mode, ciphers. I saw only six common ciphers in 12.18 on Windows 7 and my 12.18 and 12.02 systems on Windows 98. The web sites that didn't work, such as motherjones.com, still don't work.
It looks like I still have a 12.02 system? Did this exercise accomplish anything?
Has anyone had more success with this technique?
One method is to have the 5 1/4" at the end of a long floppy cable and a 3 1/2" in the middle named A and B drives. The drive on the middle connection run at twice the access time as the 5 1/4" at the end so the 3 1/2" had to be a good one, a >=2002 model. Another method is in parallel as picture shows. The prerequisite is that the 5 1/4" has to work by itself. This usually requires a machine to operate with a maximum of 66 - 83 FSB. The key board access time had to be set to 6 stokes per second or less if BIOS had adjustment. This slowed down access rate to the floppy drives so that the 5 1/4" had a chance.
I have come like many others on this site looking for informations about today computer hardware which is working with Windows 98.
To make future searches of many others easier to find solution I will here write names of "modern" MBO which support Windows 98.
Conditions to enter this list are:
1) It is now in shops near you (not internet but in real shops)
2) MBO are supporting 2007 tehnology, Windows 98 SE and we can still find official drivers
UPDATE SUMMER 2011:
For this update it have been used information from Amazon because it is possible from this site to buy MBO in ulmost every state.

For the Dutch version of Windows 98 SE and Windows 95OSR2.5 I am looking for the Updates that Microsoft has released. Unfortunately, I can no longer download them from Microsoft, because they have taken all updates offline. I can find the updates for the English version on the internet, but unfortunately it doesn't help me. because I'm looking for the Dutch. Who still has these updates somewhere on his PC and wants to share them with me. With great difficulty I have been able to find these 2 updates in Dutch with great difficulty.
245682NL8.EXE This is for when you have 1 ide port switched off in the bios (I have that) then it does not give an exclamation mark in Windows 98 for the other.
263044DUT8.EXE This is for the bug of fdsik that it does not correctly display disks larger than 64gb
I am the most looking for this (273017USA8.EXE this is the English one) I think the Dutch is called 273017DUT8.EXE. This update ensures that if you have a hard disk with a large cache, it takes 2 seconds longer to shut down
Who can help me with this?
I know there is an Unofficial Service pack with all the updates for the nl version but that service also kills things so I prefer not to install them.
Hi, Win98-Addicts!
Several weeks ago I purchased a notebook (HP NW8240) for setting up a Win98-System. While for most parts (Intel 915 chipset, etc.) Windows 98 drivers are avaible, the built-in ATI Mobility FireGL V5000 128MB RAM video card only works with Standard-(S)VGA drivers. I searched the web for working Windows 98 drivers but did not succeed. Does anybody here have an idea? The FireGL V5000 is based on the Radeon X700 for which Win98 drivers (Catalyst 6.2) do exist (). But when installing them, all I can see are some kinds of coloured lines and the screen becoming brighter and brighter until... I decide to shut down the notebook as the screen looks too dangerous. Perhaps there are problems using (desktop) X700 drivers for the mobility version e. g. clock speeds too high etc.?
Any hints and ideas are highly appriciated!
Thanks in advance and best regards.
Hella
Hello there!
My machine:
GIGABYTE Z390 Designare motherboard
Intel Core i9 9900K
32 GB Dual Channel DDR4 memory kit
EVGA nVidia GeForce 780 GTX (3 GB of VRAM)
1 TB SSD attached via internal Intel SATA AHCI controller
--> CSM Mode enabled
--> 4 External PCI slots via Exsys EX-1010 extension box
-----> Currently Creative Audigy 2 ZS installed
Currently, MS-DOS 7.1 standalone (from Windows 98 SE) works, but I needed to replace himem.sys with himemx.exe from FreeDOS, otherwise EMM386.EXE would not work properly and booting would take a long time. (Something like Machine type unknown occurred when running regular himem.sys)
I am trying to get Windows 98 SE working on this machine, but I am hitting a major roadblock.
I was able to complete the first stage of installation (before the first reboot) by doing the following:
- Creating a new FAT32 partition using the aforementioned MS-DOS install (format /Q /S /V:WIN98 D:)
- Adding himemx.exe into a new CONFIG.SYS file
- Adding EMM386.EXE into a new CONFIG.SYS file
- Starting setup from disk via setup.exe /is /pi (NO ACPI)
After the first reboot, I was told that there is not enough memory to initialize the system.
I worked around that by installing the RLOEW memory patch onto the system. (I bought it a couple months before he deceased.)
I also tried adding the MaxPhysPages parameter to SYSTEM.INI, restricting maximum memory to 512 MB via burnmem.sys, and some other workarounds.
Before that, I also checked that HIMEMX is actually being loaded. I deleted himem.sys from the Windows directory just to be sure.
The AHCI patcher from RLOEW did not seem to make any difference on my system. Perhaps the legacy mode is not supported anymore.
However, no matter what I do, with both Windows ME and Windows 98 SE I get the following black screen message:
While initializing device VCACHE:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
Windows 3.11 also freezes when starting via win.exe. Not even the splashscreen is displayed.
Do you have any idea how I could fix this and get Windows 98 to boot? Or how to troubleshoot this problem further?
This is so strange. Usually, Windows 98 "just works" on any x86 compatible machine, from my experience.
I guess a lot of things have changed since Skylake and Z170...
I would be happy if anyone on here could give me an advise on this.
Thanks a lot.
Cheers,
schreiberstein
(PS: It's my first post on this forum, but I have been lurking on here for years and appreciate this place a lot!)
For quite a time I'm using Windows 98 SE as video player. The idea was to connect a 42" plasma TV to a computer in order to play video files. In either case, the most efficient software I've found so far.
GOM Player - quite a nice video player with many advantages and a few problems.
- does not support a** subtitles
- does not resolve correctly time conflicts in subtitles
- the efficiency of the built in h264 decoder and mkv and mp4 splitters are not that great
+ high quality subtitles
+ supports many video formats with built in codecs
FFDShow - it covers for almost everything what GOM Player is lacking
+ does support a**
+ the built in h264 decoder is a fast one
- the non a** subtitles are poor in quality
- does not seem to be able to play subtitles directly from MKV files. It is necesary to extract them to separate files, first. (It is not a problem for me, since I'm using an additional tool for subtitles timing and font enhacement.)
- there are rare problems with system resources in case of some a** subtitles.
Haali Matroska Splitter - a fast MKV and MP4 splitter
It requires some tweaking to get the best performance, but these were the best I found.
I've tried a few operating systems in order to find the one fastest on a single core CPU. Windows 98 appeared to be the fastest one. Currently I'm using a Pentium 4 2,8/800 HT CPU with DDR400 memory in dual (or rather quadruple) channel. The power is more than enough for smooth play of 1280x720 h264 coded video, but is not enough for 1920x1080. So, the question is where to go from here.
It is possible to aim for multi core CPUs, but it would require to change the OS to some Windows NT core system or Linux, probably. On the other hand I've heard something about DXVA being available on Windows 98.
- According to my research the newer versions of FFDShow are able to use DXVA. The newest one comes in two different builds, one is Windows 2000 compatible, the other is not. Perhaps, it could be possible to port it to Windows 98 with KernelEX.
- DXVA 1.0 was released for Windows 2000 and newer. I've heard some rumors about Windows 98 compatibility, however. The DXVA 2.0 seems to available from Vista up.
- It could be difficult to find a DXVA compatible graphics card able to work in Windows 98.
I'm curious, if anybody was able to get the full HD with Windows 98. In my case the the playback is not efficient, enough.

For GOD sake. Why am I not able to write Advanced Substation Alpha file format? It always ends up as a**. The HELL with the automatic word correction on this forum.

HARD DISKS:
Windows 95 supports FAT16.
Windows 95B / 98 / 98SE / Me supports FAT16 and FAT32
Win95 can NOT support hard drives bigger than 32 gig
FAT16 supports drive partitions up to 2 GB.
Win9x's FAT32 can be used on any hard drive larger than 512MB and supports hard disks up to 137 GB in size. To use bigger hard disks the system requires a system update. (See Below)
Windows 9x natively supports ATA IDE Hard Disk Drives. SCSI, SATA and RAID disk drives are supported through third party drivers.
Large Hard Disk Support
Windows 98 and Me do not natively support 48-bit LBA drives larger than 137 GB.
This means:
- If you have a hard disk larger than 137GB... and Windows trys to save data onto that disk past the 137GB barrier, data corruption (loss of files) is likely to occur.
- It doesn't matter if you partition the hard disk into smaller partitions, all partitions above the hard disks physical 137GB barrier will be affected.
- If you put a single partition on the hard disk using fdisk or alternative, and its less than 137GB (UNDER 128GB is recommended as safe) you will be fine (Just Don't allocate the remainder of the disk). But if you want to use the rest of the disk you must use a work around.
Work Arounds:
LLXX's Enable48BitLBA - Implements 48-bit LBA support into Windows 95/98/98SE and ME's default IDE driver.
Windows 98 - get the 4.10.2186 driver
Windows 98 Second Edition - most users should get the 4.10.2225 driver. If you have a old IBM laptop you may have to get 4.10.2226
Windows Me - get the 4.90.3000 driver
- create a primary partition on that drive (smaller than 128GB), using fdisk
- install win9x on that partition
- install drivers
- install the suitable LLXXs patch
- fill the rest of the disk with new partitions. (Keep them under 128GB if you still wish to use Scandisk and Defrag)
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=78592
Intel Application Accelerator - Allows users to access the full capacity of hard drives that are larger than 137GB on supported Intel® chipsets with a supported operating system.
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/sb/cs-009299.htm
Rudolph Loew's 48-bit Patch - The High Capacity Disk Patch Program patches Windows 98/98SE/ME to provide direct support for hard drives larger than 137GB without requiring a controller card. The patch installs support for the 48-Bit LBA addressing mode required for hard drives larger than 137GB.
PCI ATA Controller card - Using a PCI ATA controller card to connect your 48-bit LBA hard drive to the system is the easiest and simplest option. With this option you can partition the hard drive without the need to upgrade the BIOS to support 48-bit LBA if it does not support this technology. The drivers provided with controller card will provide 48-bit LBA support in Windows 98 or Me.
More information on the 48bitLBA --> http://www.48bitlba.com/win98.htm
Partition Size Limits
The size of individual Partitions are subject to additional limitations due to FileSystem design and Partition management tools. Microsoft specifies a maximum Partition size of 128GB. Third Party Partition Management tools may have other limits.
DEFRAG and SCANDISK (in Windows Mode) are limited to less than 136.9GB Some people have reported limits as low as 127GB.
To disable ScanDisk from running after a bad shutdown in Windows 98 or Me:1. Click on Start->Run
2. Enter "MSCONFIG"
3. On the General tab, click on the Advanced button.
4. Enable the checkbox "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown"
5. Click on OK to exit the advanced settings
6. Click on OK to exit MSCONFIG.
DOS, WINDOWS and SCANDISK (in DOS Mode) can handle at least 400GB.
WARNING: Diskeeper 10 claims to support Partitions up to 768GB and Windows 98/SE/ME. Tests show that it can corrupt large Partitions.
It is recommended that you Partition your Large Hard Drive with 2 or more Partitions so that no single Primary or Logical Partition is larger than 127GB.
FDISK can be used to Partition Large Hard Drives but will incorrectly report sizes above 64GB. You will need to enter sizes as Percentages in order to use the full capacity of the Hard Drive.
OPTICAL DISK DRIVES:
Windows 9x natively supports IDE optical drives without additional drivers.
This includes CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD Dual Layer drives.
FLOPPY DISK DRIVES
Windows 9x natively supports internal Floppy Disk Drives.
Hello MSFN!
I'm aiming to install Windows 98 or ME on my Dell Precision when I figured I could originally work around the ram by manually setting ram limitations, then came upon a dead-end of no SATA CDROM or Drive Drivers because the machine cannot disable those options.
In theory, would it be possible for me to simply install Windows 9x on a virtual machine, install required drivers there, then convert to my physical machine? The process sounds a lot less tedious and installing the actual OS wouldn't take nearly as long. I can install Windows ME instantly, enable DOS-mode back, install rloew's SATA, ram, and 2tb hard drive patches there easily. Unlike the physical machine, I won't have to physically remove the ram in my machine or potentially dual-boot Linux to access to Windows 9x partition. I can also include all the necessary files in case of an issue (USB, drivers, software, utilities, etc.)
I would imagine setting up a bootable Linux USB, copying the file inside the flash drive, then applying the system image into the physical machine. If we could do this on any machine in theory, then 9x could be implemented on any machine (no guarantee for drivers, but rloew's patch for that may help).
EDIT: So far, I've learned that a VHD can be mounted and copied. But, I still haven't tried yet. Using copyzilla, I successfully had my Windows ME partition copied to the flash drive and...it sorta boots. The system won't boot past the main menu; I believe this is because my boot device itself is a usb device...I've noticed while launching Windows ME on my old laptop, keeping a flash drive plugged in during boot would completely cause freezing upon boot. If anyone has a solution, please tell me!
so fresh install of 98se and using the unofficial sp3. my boot takes longer now and in the middle of it I get a dos prompt screen that says
C:\>SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
Is this something I can somehow permanently change so it's not delaying the bootup?
