Im trying to something on old installation (installed with ACPI), but system devices often collide with ACPI Embedded somehing, ACPI Bios.. and ACPI IRQ something mutipletimes, but these devices are found only after Add new HW Wizard search, otherwise after System device removal and PCI bus addition they are not there.. but add new hw wizzard also find usefull devices after search.. and there are probably other ACPI related issues.
My trick of turning a link like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUcdb6xHybo
Into this:

for playback on FF2 has recently sometimes not worked for some video's. I still get a full-screen preview frame and all player controls are there, but when I hit play I get a screen full of static with the message "watch this video on youtube. Playback on other websites has been disabled by the video owner". Which is strange, since I am playing it on youtube. Same thing happens on Opera 12.02 (but I can play the original un-modified video URL on Opera 12.02). So if anyone knows why the modified URL is causing youtube to throw this error message and refuse to play the video, let me know...
Hi,
I'm trying to benchmark with 3DMark suite a bunch of old Windows 98SE machines. I've tracked down all the latest applications available to Win98SE, including DirectX 9.0c (August 2006) and 3DMark2001 SE. The last one, however, refuse to install. The error says that it needs DX8.1 or newer, but I've already installed DX9.0c. So, I took a look to DxDiag: it is actually detecting DX6.1!!The point is that nVidia Control Panel (I'm using a GF4 MX440) is detecting the latest DX9.0c.
I really don't know what to do. Can anybody help me?

SOFTWARE THAT SUPPORTS WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION
Here you will find a list of software that supports Windows 98 Second Edition (Win98SE).
For Freeware / Shareware / Open Source programs a link to a download source will be provided.
Note: Do NOT post links to illegal download sources for Commercial Software / Cracks / KeyGens / Warez etc!!!
To find older versions of commercial software,, try searching places like http://www.amazon.com and others, will show second hand and old stock software. Auction sites are also useful but are often plagued with sophisticated piracy!
KEY:
LAST = Last version of software to support Win98SE
ONGD = On Going Development. This software is still being developed and still supports Win98SE
FREE = Freeware (Completely Free)
SHAR = Shareware (Free trial)
$$$$ = Commercial Software. Must be purchased

There are some people having problems with their Creative Sound Blaster Live! in Windows 9x.
Creative CD release drivers and Web Release drivers seem to be in many different revisions for different cards...
Some revisions are good and some are not.
For years I have been collecting and testing newer versions of creative driver files to determine those that worked in 9x with the Live!.
Following is that collection of driver files:
Please note that these are original, freely available Creative files, and the binaries are not modified or patched in any way.
The provided software is useless without a Creative Sound Blaster Live! card installed.
Main Driver Set (4.42 MiB)

SB0100 - PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0002&SUBSYS_80661102 - Sound Blaster Live! (Gen III) 5.1 (Unofficial)
If you have a Creative Sound Blaster Live! card that is not recognised by these drivers, then please post your PCI ID.
The PCI ID can be found using regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\PCI
Look for a key starting with VEN_1102&DEV_0002, and copy the key name.
I have used these drivers in Windows 98SE, but they should support 95 and Me although I have not tested them on these platforms.
There are Creative installers for Windows 95 and for Windows 98/Me.
Windows 9x Pure DOS support drivers
For those wanting Pure DOS (outside of Windows) Sound Blaster 16 Emulation for their Live! and have lost or never had the original CD, or have a newer CD that does not come with these, or simply can't be bothered looking for them:
1999 Release (823 KiB):
mirror 1: http://www.divshare.com/download/6106307-f19
mirror 2: http://www.mdgx.com/sbdrv/sbldos.zip
2000 Release (827 KiB):
mirror 1: http://www.divshare.com/download/6107195-60d
mirror 2: http://www.mdgx.com/sbdrv/sbldos2.zip
There are two releases of DOS Drivers. The 2000 release should work on all Live! cards, but if there is a problem then use the 1999 release.
Note: DOS Emulation may not work on some (newer) motherboards if the BIOS does not map the PCI SERR# signal to the processor NMI (Non-Maskable Interrupt). Look in the BIOS settings for a PCI SERR setting or check with your mobo vendor for a BIOS upgrade, or dump the Mobo for one that works properly!

Standard disclaimer
These drivers have worked for me but YMMV. I have been using them for years with no problem, however, they may or may not work on your model of Creative sound card, and therefore, I cannot make any guarantee of suitability. In simple terms, you are solely responsible if your audio begins to sound like you're in a concrete bunker some thirty-seven miles from the stage of Disaster Area!
Enjoy!
i had researched fable the lost chapters and noticed that it uses opengl, i was wondering if you can bypass the directx 9.0c requirement it has someway and make it run still on older operating systems such as windows 95 that only supports up to dx8.0a but fully support opengl. i had researched and a source had mentioned that fable requires a minimum of directx 8.0 pixel programmable pixel shader 1.1 which directx 8.0a does support, 8.0a supports up to 1.3 pixel shader, so with that being said, is there any way to bypass the error it gives of the directx 9 dll file, like tricking the system in thinking it has the updated directx 9 file or some other way, or is it more complicated than this?
i have tested this myself a while back by copying the fable program into the windows 95 pc and trying to run it, and it just threw the directx 9 error.
Hello,
i want to know, if there is really working NFTS read/write solution for Windows 98SE, i tried Sysinternals NTFS (read only) and Paragon NTFS(seems to be limited to partition size 8.4 GB or at least i see such error), is there any better solution for reasonable partition size (at least 100 GB)?
I'm a bit of a newb here, sorry...
I have no idea what I'm doing. I know I need the Revolutions Pack and KernelEx, but what order do I install them? Do I need 98MP10 and 98SE2ME? Should I use u98sesp3?
Thanks!

Was there a change to the msfn site software about a week ago? I don't think any of the site navigation buttons/links are working any more under win-98 / Opera 12.02.
All,
I'm working on a guide to compile DOSBox. Currently I have a guide that covers Visual Studio 2002-2017, next will be MinGW on Windows and then Linux.
Guide: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=55706&p=611833#p609435
I've attached the binaries to the first post.
I'd appreciate it if you could test the releases and offer any suggestions.
Currently this guide is only intended for compiling the official DOSBox source. No third party patches.
The NT3.5x to Windows 2000 binaries were compiled using VS2008 with Legacy Extender
The XP and Vista+ binaries were compiled with VS2017.
Hi!
I've just installed Windows ME on a Pentium III 1GHz with a GeForce4 MX440 graphics card. Just before, I had Windows 98 SE, but I didn't upgrade it, it's a clean install. I've installed also Half-Life and Quake II. These games, which ran seamlessly on Win98, are now really really slow on WinME. When I launch DXdiag.exe and I run video tests, the 3D one fails on every DX level, from 7 to 9. DirectDraw 2D tests work fine.
I downloaded the latest driver from nVidia website, which was working fine on Win98 and also Win95, and DX9.0c (August 2006) from Microsoft Download Center, and also this was working good on Win98. Previously I had a Matrox Millenium G450, but it performed really bad on OpenGL rendering (even worse than the Ati Rage 128 Pro!), so I uninstalled the driver and the video card, and then swapped it with the GF4 MX440. Now, I have potato performance on either OpenGL and DirectX, only Software rendering works fine, but a very low resolution.
Is that a WinME "feature"? Or have I did it in the wrong way?

Hi Guys;
i am trying to get Midway Arcade Tresures Deluxe working on Windows 98SE, i can confirm it works flawlessy as i had it installed before doing a re-format. I tried installing the game, reset computer tried to open, it was greeted with an error message "unable to locate WMVCore.dll"
i then installed Windows Media Player which comes with that Dll file. After installation i had a new error now "The MCR2_3.exe file is linked to missing export WMVCore.dll:WMCreateReader"
Does anyone know what this means or how i can fix it.
Thanks
Just for kicks, I decided to try installing Windows 95 on my super PC. I formatted the HDD, and ran setup. Worked flawlessly. When the time came to boot, though, it complained about not having enough memory to initialise.
A Google search revealed a KB article that instructed to edit system.ini with a MaxPhysPage of 300000. I did so through DOS. Next was a protection error involving IOS. After Googling again and reading some KB articles, I didn't really find a solution, though I figured it would be that timing problem. On the KB article of that issue the error message was similar. Not being able to even boot in Safe Mode (not enough memory, huh?), I copied the necessary files from the AMD-K6 update on a floppy and copied them over manually.
Then Windows 95 setup continued, and after a couple reboots Windows 95's desktop appeared in 16-colour glory. Next step is finding/trying some drivers.
Still, I'm happy that it even runs. Since my CPU is an AMD Sempron 2800+, I feared that the AMD-K6 update wouldn't be enough, since Windows 98 had another timing problem that occurred with a CPU faster than 2.1 Ghz or so.
Hello everyone, as the title says I'm looking for old Windows 95 updates and tools. Anything and everything, as they are all but disappeared from the Internet.
I know MDGx has several on his website, and I have archived most of these, but I know there are several others out there.
In the second post of This Thread, Petr made a list of many updated 95 files, and said that he had collected the updates. I have attempted to contact him, but have not received a response. If anyone else has any of these files archived, I'd appreciate your help.
Also, if anyone happens to have a copy of the early Cabinet Resource Kit that includes DIAMOND.EXE and the related documentation, that would be very helpful as well. (Windows 95 CAB's are compressed with QUANTUM compression, and Windows 95 Setup only understands QUANTUM or MSZIP, not the LZX format used by 98/ME)
*DIAMOND.EXE FOUND! Thanks to submix8c.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT - Adding lists of updates. Will be updated/modified/rearranged as necessary.
***List Updated 1-20-2011 6:00PM EST***
Let's concentrate on updates for OSR 2.0 - OSR 2.5 for starters. Some updates include files for multiple Windows 95 versions however, so let's not lose any of those in the process.
These updates I already have archived. If you have or are aware of multiple or different versions of any of these, or one of these updates with a different name, it may be worthy of further investigation.

On my ThinkPad T40 98SE machine (which is beautiful, by the way), whenever I open WMP9 (even without any file to play), the System/GDI resources drop significantly.
The worst part is when you try to choose/select a skin, the resources drop to below 20%.
I've tried 98MP10, but it only got slightly worse, now it drops to 0%.
Any tips for that? No other app does that. I want to enjoy my Toothy skin without any problems.
EDIT: Installing KernelEx and Revolutions Pack 9 did help somewhat, but depending on the skin, it can drop to 70% (Toothy) or to 35% (Compact/WMP11 skin).
Maybe obtaining rpXbeta1.zip would help, I can't find it anywhere. Is it even necessary when you have the latest version of Revolutions Pack?
EDIT2: I've been reading about the whole GDI thing in 98SE, the best bet is to simply install latest Revolutions Pack and be done with it? And just to live with 70% as there is no better option? Anything changed since Tihiy left 98SE scene?
The DOS multibooting procedure between DOS, OS/2 and Windows 95 has became a wonderful project of mutibooting between these OSes under Virtual PC 2007.
However, for one OS, I'm running into issues here.
I have Windows 95 installed on the third hard drive. Using GRUB4DOS, I had to hide the MS-DOS hard disk image on (hd0) and the OS/2 Warp hard disk image on (hd1).
I then mapped the third hard disk image where Windows 95 is installed on (hd2) as (hd0) and although the OS work fine, it's showing original drive letters, M, N, O and P as phantom hard drives and drives C, D, E and F using MS-DOS compatiblity mode file system.
Here are some screenshots for proof of this issue:
Windows Explorer showing drive letters M, N, O and P as phantom drives.
Device manager listing drive letters M, N, O and P in the current drive letter assignment in System Properties > Disk drives.
System Properties > Performance reporting drives C, D, E and F using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Here is the Windows 95 entry in the GRUB4DOS MENU.LST file
title Microsoft Windows 95\n\n find --set-root /IO.SYS unhide (hd2,0) unhide (hd2,4) unhide (hd2,5) unhide (hd2,6) root (hd2,0) savedefault hide (hd0,0) hide (hd0,4) hide (hd0,5) hide (hd0,6) hide (hd1,0) hide (hd1,4) hide (hd1,5) hide (hd1,6) map (hd0) (hd2) map (hd2) (hd0) map --floppies=1 chainloader +1
Rather than taking the risk of having to reinstall Windows 95 on the third hard disk image, is there a way how to get rid of drive letters M, N, O and P completely? Hiding drive letters using TweakUI won't help since DOS and Windows File Manager will still see these drives.
