Is this computer compatible with Windows 98 SE?

I have a Dell Dimension E510 desktop from around 2006-ish. It has an Intel 945G chipset and a 82801 controller hub, a 2.6 GHz Pentium D processor, and 2 GB of RAM. I have compatible PCI cards for the graphics, sound, and network, and I can downgrade the RAM to 1 GB by removing one of the modules. I'm just wondering if there are Windows 98 drivers for the motherboard, and if anyone else has had luck with Windows 9x on 945G motherboards. I tried searching for the drivers on Intel's website, but I keep getting dead links.

Best W98SE PC

Howdy,

I'm looking at building a W98SE rig, with the best/most durable hardware components, the case being that of a Compaq Presario 7360, for nostalgic purposes.

I know that there is a lot of unstability with W98 when it comes to the newer hardware and whatnot, so I've come asking for your knowledge and advice.

From what I could gather, the mobo that came with the 7360 is an ATX, so at least I have that to start from.

I was thinking about a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73Ghz for the processor, FAT32 under 137GB (so files won't get corrupted).

I was thinking about a ASUS P5PE-VM mobo, but I don't think that it would be compatible (seeing how it's a micro-ATX, unless if I'm stopid)

Thanks for reading, and for the advice,

Cheers,

Jimmy

Fastest and Most compatible Win98 Graphics Card

Hey Guys;

i know there is alot of topics about this subject, but i noticed non of them cover the importance of compatibility, and the RAM limit of the video card that Windows 98 Supports.

So recently purchased a Geforce 7600GT 512mb AGP for my Win98 PC. and was disappointed to find out that the Unofficial NVIDIA Display Driver 82.69 does detected my card, i tried manually installing but i was getting heaps of issues after black screen, not booting, restart issues etc. The only solution is to pay $21 for a bios fix from leow, but to be honest I would rather just get a Video card that has native support for Windows98 and 100% compatible with 0 Issues. Maybe if i had a high end card like the 7900 i would purchase it.

Right now i am using my onboard graphics "Intel Extreme Graphics 2" and having no isses.

So can someone please recommend me a card for Windows98 that has native support and 100% compatible.

512MB nVidia Graphics Cards

512MB Graphics Cards have proven to be problematical when used with Windows 9x.

I ran some tests with a nVidia 7200GS and a nVidia 7950GT on various Motherboards to determine why.

Apparently nVidia decided to change their design approach after releasing some 512MB Cards.

Previously they provided access to the entire Video RAM through the Memory Mapped I/O Space.

This approach unfortunately limits the amount of System RAM that can be used by 32-Bit OSes.

With the later 512MB Cards they decided to Bank Memory access through a smaller MMIO Space, typically 256MB.

Starting with the 8xxx series they also implemented a Memory Page Mapper similar to the MMU in the CPU.

The 7200GS is an example of the earlier design. The 7950GT is an example of the later one.

The 82.69 nVidia Driver does not recognize the difference between the reported amount of Video RAM and the size of the MMIO Space allocated to the Card.

The Driver overwrites the MMIO Space above the Video Card's allocation.

Depending upon what is in the next 256MB of MMIO Space, your Computer can crash or other Devices, such as USB, can malfunction.

A few people have been lucky enough not to have anything important in this space so they have been able to use a 7950GT although they only get 256MB.

Others have not been so lucky.

I have developed two solutions for this problem.

1. A Patch to the 82.69 Driver to make it recognize the smaller MMIO Space.

2. A BIOS Patcher for the nVidia BIOS ROM to increase the amount of MMIO Space it claims.

The first is more universal but limits the Video RAM typically to 256MB. The second provides the full 512MB Video RAM of the Card.

I am preparing a Package to put on my Website.

Important / "Stickified" / Pinned Windows 95/98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME Topics

Please see FYI #1 + FYI #2 at bottom of this list.

Unofficial Windows 95, 98 FE (First Edition), 98 SP1 (Service Pack 1), 98 SE (Second Edition) + ME (Millennium Edition):

FYI #1:
Per forum members request I have "trimmed" down the number of topics actually listed under "Important Topics" here:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=91
for easier layout reading, because some of us still use lower desktop screen resolutions.

FYI #2:
All project authors, creators + maintainers:
Please do *not* create a new forum topic/thread every time you update your project(s) or whenever you post a new update/edition/build/release/version/etc.
This way all pinned/"stickified" ones will *always* be listed here.
Instead, I suggest [if you are the topic creator] you:
- edit + update the 1st post of each topic;
- add the date + the new version/build [if appropriate] into each topic subtitle;
to let every1 know when/why you posted a new update/edition/build/release/version/etc.
But if for any reason you need to create a new topic, please PM me with the new URL so I can add it to this list.

Thanks for understanding, and keep up your outstanding work. :thumbup

Enjoy.

Final Inquiry About 98SE and KernelEx

$

I'm about to save any useful files I've accumulated with 98SE and wipe the system.
It's not what I want, but I have never been able to use KernelEx successfully with
a modern browser.

The three attached jpegs are from a recent version of K-Meleon, but I get the same
error messages from almost any app that's listed here at MSFN or the KernelEx Wiki.

The first error box is easy to fix. It's always about a missing DLL. Copying the DLL into
the System directory resolves that problem.

The error boxes about a "linked missing export" and "A device attached to this system is
not functioning" seem intractable. Many people have been kind enough to offer suggestions,
but everything I've tried has failed.

I have considered hardware conflicts. The problem with that theory is VLC and GOM Media
Players. Following the advice in the Wiki, they both run fine with KernelEx. I'm also running
a couple of obscure photo editing apps. If hardware was the problem, why do these apps
run with KernelEx?

I recently installed the latest Unofficial 98SE Service Pack (3.53). I was hoping a USP might
update the system enough to resolve all these problems. It didn't work, but it seemed like a
good thing to try. No harm done, I keep plenty of image backups to restore the system.

I learned how to create scripts with these early Windows systems. Automating all sorts of
complex processes is the reason I continued to use 98SE.

The older versions of K-Meleon, SeaMonkey, Opera, etc., no longer render most web pages
properly. Unless I can get a modern browser to work with KernelEx, my copy of 98SE will
be retired.

I've got a USB stick with bootable apps that completely wipe hard disks. If that's what I have
to do, I'll ask a friend. Doing the job myself would be too depressing.

Realtek Wi-Fi utility crashing

$

Where do I even start with this turd? I recently got this HiRO H50069 Wireless PCI card for my Windows 98 machine. It has a Realtek RTL8185 chipset, and the drivers are listed as "compatible" with Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP, and Vista. The card works fine in WinXP, but under Win98SE, I'm forced to use Realtek's crap wireless utility since Win98SE doesn't have WZC like WinXP does. The driver and utility installed fine, but it has problems. The utility has a 50% chance of crashing at startup. Whenever I change networks, it crashes. Whenever I resume from sleep mode, it crashes. Whenever I try to reset my internet connection, it crashes. Whenever I look at it sideways, it crashes. Sometimes, when it starts up without crashing, it will give me a key mismatch error even though I gave it the correct WPA key. Clicking "ReNew IP" a few times fixes this, as long as it doesn't crash. Only about 1 in 4 times I launch it, I am able to successfully connect to my wireless network, and then it may crash afterwards. I originally thought KernelEx might be interfering, but I booted in "step by step confirmation mode", and disabled KernelEx, but it still crashes. My computer also doesn't enter sleep mode automatically while this thing is running. On top of that, it runs this EAPWake.exe process that constantly consumes 20-30% CPU usage. I've found that killing EAPWake.exe has no negative impact on the utility or my wireless connection.
Does anyone have tips on dealing with this horrendously buggy software?

Title says it all, please mention any "High End" (For its time) Laptop models which support (Or drivers at least work) on Windows 98/ME! I'm a bit new to this, feel free to correct me anytime.

Example:

Dell Latitude D600 - Pentium M 745 @ 1.6 (Or 1.7?)GHz, 14.1', 1024x768 screen resolution, ATI Radeon 9000 Mobility Video Card (Unsure if this comes with the laptop since I've never owned one), and Sigmatel Audio

Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 driver for Windows98 (Continuation)

$
0
0

Yep, I'm reviving this while trying not to be banned I guess?

I have downloaded a driver (Not for 9x!) from the Fujitsu website for my Fujitsu Lifebook S7010 which even though there isn't any documentation of anyone using Windows 98 on it, I'm trying anyway. My plan is to use the utility KernelEx to allow this 2k/XP installer to work and hopefully get the driver working period. An advantage with this driver (that I'll link down below) is that (kinda unfortunately at the same time) it comes with Intel Proset Wireless. Even though it's a bit bulky and not all user friendly, and kind of annoying, it worked when I had that laptop on 2k. So, my theory is by using KernelEx to provide a compatibility layer for 2k, which is more likely to work than trying to provide the layer XP-wise and above, it will install and allow me to connect to Wireless Networks!

Link:http://www.fujitsupc.com/downloads/mobile/WLAN_INTEL_2200BG,2915ABG_V9.0.4.26_XP.EXE

Notes: I haven't done this yet. It's a theory that I will hopefully get around to testing later. I have already found 9x drivers for other devices on the Laptop. Also, the laptop doesn't OFFICIALLY support 9x, and even though the website lists  2k drivers for almost all of the devices, there is no where that says 2k was officially supported either. The link above was listed under XP, but I know it works with 2k because I tested that during the Laptop's 2k stage. If you want me to create a topic saying EVERYTHING involving me getting 9x to work on this laptop (if it works), then just tell me and I'll do it happily. Respond if you test this yourself and tell me your results if you can.

Why do this: Because I can, and I want a 9x laptop that isn't broken.

OpenGL freezing with 512 MB of RAM

$

Here are my computer's specs:

PC: Dell Dimension 4300

Chipset: Intel i810

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 at 1.5 GHz

RAM: 512 MB SDRAM at 133 MHz

Graphics: ATI Radeon 9550xl 256 MB

Sound: SoundMax Integrated Audio

Network: D-Link AirPlus XtremeG DWL-g520 wireless 802.11b/g

OS: Windows 98 Second Edition

I have a strange problem. I recently installed the ATI Radeon graphics card and the D-Link Wi-Fi card into my system. Both work very well, except not together. When the Wi-Fi card is enabled and I start up an OpenGL game like Quake 3, Neverball, or Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, my entire system locks up and Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't even work. If I remove the Wi-Fi card or disable it in Device Manager, the games work fine. However, I removed one of my RAM modules today, reducing it to 256 MB, and surprisingly everything worked. I was able to play Quake 3 online through Wi-Fi. I originally thought I might have some bad RAM and ran Memtest86+, but it didn't detect any problems. I also tried swapping the RAM sticks and trying both slots, but the result was that it always worked with one RAM stick installed and froze with both installed. I've heard of 1 GB of RAM causing problems with Windows 98, but I thought 512 MB should work. 256 MB is okay, but I'd really want 512 since I dual boot this with Linux which needs the extra memory. I'd really like to know what's causing this problem and if there's any way to fix it software-wise.

Building a fully compatible 98SE computer

$

Hi, :)

Over the next few months I'm going to be building two computer which are going to be running Windows 98SE, mostly for gaming. One for myself, and one for a friend.

I'm sure that along the way I'll have to ask a few questions, so I've started this thread to ask them all in one place.

My first question is about picking out a motherboard. I'm finding it hard to find one that's right for my needs. I want it to be a pretty good one, and my friend wants PCIe (I'm happy with PCIe or AGP). And of course I need to have 98SE drivers for it.

I found this motherboard, which has the Intel P965 chipset (which is compatible with 98SE, right?), but I can't see drivers for it anywhere. Would it work with 98SE, or have I made a mistake? And where do you think I could get drivers?
